Phase 1 of the Vernonia Elementary School playground has been installed and is beautiful. Now we are looking for help in raising funds for phase 2. PTA is currently looking for a person willing to co-chair the fundraising position on the board. If you are interested in helping with our efforts, please contact Melissa Zavales or Susan Ely.
Saturday, September 20th at Vernonia Lake from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM we will be holding a Bike-a-thon fundraiser for phase 2 of the playground. This will be a fun and fit activity for all students. Students set realistic lap goals based on age and development. Drinks will be provided and awards will be given for exceptional participation. Pledge sheets need to be turned in the day of the bike-a-thon. If you haven’t received one you can get one from the PTA bulletin board in the school, Sentry Market, and at The Black Iron Grill. So come ready for fun! We look forward to seeing you! Don’t forget your bikes and helmets! Read More
Thanks to the Vernonia PTA, kids at the Vernonia Schools have a new play structure to use this school year. The PTA raised the funds and volunteers, including members of the Vernonia Freewheelers Club installed it. The PTA plans to continue raising money and will add onto and expand the structure in the future.
Installation Planned for August 22-23
The Vernonia PTA is pleased to announce that Phase I of a new playground play structure has been purchased for the school campus. The PTA plans to install the entire structure in three phases as funds become available.
Plans call for Phase I to be installed and ready for students on the first day of school this year.
The PTA has been hard at work during the last several years raising funds to purchase and install playground equipment. The purchase of Phase I will cost just over $7,000.
An installation work party has been scheduled for Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24. Work party leaders and volunteers are needed.
“This is a huge deal!” says PTA President Melissa Zavales. “Our kids and school have been without a playground! We are so excited and this should be a huge and exciting event for our community and students!”
A Grand Opening celebration is being planned during the School Open House on October 9th.
Playground Committee Making Progress-The Vernonia Playground Committee is a new group that has formed out of need by community members and parents who have the desire to work toward getting playground equipment at our new school. The money for the new school playground was cut from the budget due to rising costs. It has been over a year since we have moved in to the new building and still with no equipment for the kids to use at recess. After all, what is recess without a playground?
There is good news. The Vernonia Community PTA along with the Vernonia Education Foundation, Jacob Levenseller Fund raised enough money to purchase two bays of six swings for the playground that will be going in behind the school. The swings have been ordered and delivered and have just been awaiting the excavation of the land and volunteer support to install them. Hopefully by the time you are reading this they will be up and used by the kids! A big thank you to new resident, and parent of young children, Casey Hunter, for stepping in to help! Read More
The new commercial grade microwave is in place. It was purchased by Vernonia Community PTA with funds raised at last year’s carnival (separate from money raised for playground equipment) This was decided upon as a needed item by the VHS Leadership Class and will be a welcome addition to keep the lines shorter at lunchtime.
Packets have been sent home with elementary students for our “Jazzercise for a Jungle Gym” fundraiser. Students will gather pledges from friends and family in exchange for 45 minutes of hard exercise led by Jazzercise guru Penny Costley. This packet will be handed in on Friday the 20th with money. The Jazzercise will happen in two time slots: 3rd-5th grade 8-8:45 AM and K-2nd 10:15-11 AM. We are looking for volunteers to help with handing out a small snack and prize to participants on this day. Read More
On Saturday, March 30, 2013, young Vernonians got ready for the Easter Holiday with a traditional Easter Egg Hunt.
This annual event was once again sponsored by the Vernonia PTA. Young and old alike enjoyed the gathering of eggs and other prizes. The hunt was followed by a free raffle sponsored by Vernonia Rural Fire Department for Easter Baskets stuffed with fun things. The children also has a chance to visit with the Easter Bunny, who was able to attend the event again this year, before heading off to get ready to make his Easter morning rounds.
Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success again this year!
