The Scuttlebutt

ScuttlebuttRainbow-webRainbow-This photo, taken just days before the huge rainstorm that hit Vernonia during the weekend of September 27-30,  was shared with us by Maggie Peyton.  The photo is  overlooking the Vernonia School Campus.  Peyton took the shot  from the new office of the Upper Nehalem Watershed Council,  which is downstairs from the School District Office. Thanks Maggie for sharing this with us—after last weekend we needed it!

Oregon Marathon-Runners from all over the country descended on Vernonia and Stub Stewart State Park on Saturday September 28 for the Oregon Marathon and Half Marathon.  The Marthon started at the Vernonia School in a driving rain and headed through town and down the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail,  eventually ending in Banks.  The Half Marathon started at Stub Stewart Park.

ScuttlebuttOregonMarathon-webApproximately 250 runners from twenty-seven states started the Marathon including the only Vernonian, Don Shulte.  Shulte, who said he has not run a Marathon since he was nineteen years old, finished in 4:40:53, good for 16th place in the 45-49 age group.  Shulte said he could now cross that item off his bucket list!

A total  of 400 runners completed the race.   Derek Handegard set a new personal record with a time of 1:29:50 and finished 2nd in the 40-45 age group and 9th overall.  Nicole DeWitt took 5th in the 20-24 age group with a time of 1:50:35.  Kellie Murray finished  in 1:58:42, good for 10th in the 50-54 group.  Jennifer Draeger finished 19th in the 30-34 group with a time of 1:53:18.  And Tammy Sullivan finished in a time of 2:32:40, good for 43rd in the 40-44 group.ScuttlebuttMarathonDerek-web

ScuttlebuttDonuts-webDonuts!-Kathy Larsen, who runs the Made In Vernonia Store has been making and selling donuts this summer on Saturday mornings outside her shop.  And these aren’t just any donuts.  Larsen makes her dough with sweet potatoes and also has just about perfected a gluten free recipe.  She tops her donuts with a browned butter icing and, well,  the whole thing has really become quite popular.  It’s a regular stop for many locals on Saturday mornings, including members of the VPD and out of town visitors.  Kathy shared this photo of several ladies who  said they rode their bikes up the Linear Trail from Banks just for Saturday Morning donuts at Made In Vernonia.  The Saturday of Salmon Festival, October 5th, will be your last chance to get donuts this year.
