Loggers Take 6th at State

The Vernonia Loggers boys basketball team brought home the sixth place trophy from the OSAA 2A State Championships in Pendleton.

The VHS boys ended the tournament with a 2-2 record, losing their final game to Central Linn 67-51.  In the final game, Jared Leone led the Loggers with 23 points and 6 rebounds.  Austin Cutright added 12 points and 11 rebounds and Jesse Edgar scored 8 points and had 8 rebounds.

Loggers Win in Consolation Round

The Vernonia Loggers boys basketball team defeated Oakridge 52-44 in the consolation round at the OSAA State Championships in Pendleton on Thursday, February 28.

The Loggers move on the fourth place game where they will face Central Linn on Saturday at 10:45 AM.

Loggers Lose at State

The Vernonia Loggers fell in the quarterfinals at the OSAA 2A State Championships in Pendleton on Wednesday night.  The Loggers lost 61-46 to the Oakland Oakers.  The Loggers continue play in the consolation round on Thursday, where they face Oakridge at 10:45 AM. Read More

Loggers Play Tonight in State Quarterfinals

The VHS Logger boys are in Pendleton for the second year in a row to compete in the 2A OSAA State Basketball Championships.  Vernonia will face  the Oakland Oakers at 6:30 PM tonight in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Oakland won the Mountainview League with a 12-0 league record and 21-5 record overall.  They defeated Gold Beach in the first round of the state tournament, 62-48.

The Loggers finished their regular season in third place in the Northwest League with an 11-5 record and have 15-10 record overall.  Seventh seeded Vernonia defeated the number two seed Regis 41-40 on Friday February 22 to earn their trip to Pendleton.

Loggers Head to Pendleton; Lady Loggers Lose

The VHS Logger boys will head to Pendleton for the second year in a row to compete in the 2A OSAA State Basketball Championships.  Seventh seed Vernonia defeated the number two seed Regis 41-40 on Friday, February 22 in a thrilling finish.  Jared Leone hit the winning shot for the Loggers and the defense stopped the Rams on their final attempt.

The Loggers will face the Oakland Oakers on Wednesday February 27 at 6:30 PM in the quarterfinals.  Oakland won the Mountainview League with a 12-0 league record and 21-5 record overall.  The Loggers are the only remaining team in the Championship from the Northwest League, as Gaston, Riverdale and Delphian were all eliminated in the first round. Loggers To Play in State Basketball Tournament

Both the Girls and Boys basketball teams from Vernonia High School have qualified for the State Tournament this year.

The Lady Loggers added to their regular season Northwest League championship by winning the League Tournament on Saturday February 16 with a 48-41 victory over Portland Christian.  The Lady Loggers will host Heppner on Saturday February 23 in the first round of the State Tournament.  The start time for the game has not been determined.  Heppner finished their regular  season in fourth place in the Blue Mountain League with 12-4 league record and an 18-6 record overall. Vernonia Boys Lose, Play Again Saturday

The Vernonia Boys Basketball team lost to Gaston 57-47 on Thursday night in the first round of the Northwest League playoffs.

The Loggers can still earn a spot in the State Tournament with a win over Delphian.  The Loggers take on the Dragons on Saturday at Portland State University.

VHS Boys and Girls Win Final Games

The Vernonia Girls and Boys basketball teams won their final league games of the season and will prepare for the Northwest League Tournament next week.

The Logger Boys defeated Nestucca 52-45 and finished the regular season with an 11-5 league record and a 13-9 over all record.  The Loggers end the season in third place and face an away game at second place Gaston on Thursday February 14 at 7:00 PM in the first round of the league tournament.

Meanwhile the Lady Loggers ended their season with a 60-25 win over Nestucca and finish with  a  14-2 league record and a 18-4 record over all.  The Lady Loggers were the Northwest League Champions and will await the outcome of the first two rounds of the league tournament before playing in the championship game on Saturday February 16.  The Lady Loggers are assured a spot in the first round of the State Tournament.

VHS Winter Sports Report

Girls Basketball-The Vernonia Lady Loggers clinched first place and the Northwest League championship with their 49-40 win over Riverdale on Saturday February 2, 2013.  It was the sixteenth win in a row for head coach Steve Whiteman and the Vernonia girls.  The win guarantees the Lady Loggers a spot in the first round of the State Playoffs.

Against Riverdale Vernonia trailed by nine points with just five minutes left in the game but came storming back to overtake the Mustangs.

“These girls are gritty and they’ll go to the floor and fight,” said Whiteman.

On Friday night February 1, the Lady Loggers defeated Faith Bible 32-23.  Vernonia won both games without Maina Martin, a key player on the team.

Vernonia also had a 39-33 win over Knappa and back-to-back wins over Delphian.

The Lady Loggers play their final regular season game at home against Nestucca on Friday February 8, which will also be Senior night.

Boys Basketball-The Loggers Boys lost to Riverdale 42-40, on Saturday February 2, 2013 but remain in third place in the Northwest League with a 9-5 record.

The game against Riverdale was a close battle that came down to the final shot of the game which the Loggers were unable to convert.

The Loggers had previously won five straight games including  league wins over Delphian (twice) 50-46 and 51-36,   Knappa 62-42 and Faith Bible 58-46.  They also defeated Warrenton in a non-league game 48-36.

The Loggers final regular season game will be Senior Night at home against Nestucca on February 8.

Wrestling-The Vernonia Wrestlers continued on their road to the District Tournament with mixed results.

At the Oregon Wrestling Classic on January 18-19 the Loggers went head-to-head in dual meets and defeated Grant Union 54-21 and Oakridge 42-33 before falling to Central Linn 46-24, Knappa 42-24 and Crater JV 45-36.

In dual league meets the Loggers defeated Nestucca 52-12 and also defeated Waldport on January 24 and then split a pair of meets on January 30, defeating Neah-Kah-Nie 40-26 and loosing  a heartbreaker to Knappa 39-34.

The Loggers host a home meet on February 7 as they prepare for the District Meet on  February 15-16,  which will also be hosted by Vernonia.

Lady Loggers Win Streak Ends at Sixteen, Boys Win

The Vernonia Lady Loggers basketball team lost to Neah-Kah-Nie 35-33 on Tuesday February 5, 2013, ending their sixteen game winning streak.

The Vernonia girls remain is first place in the Northwest League with a 13-2 record.

The Vernonia Boys won their game against Neah-Kah-Nie 66-36.  The Loggers are in third place  with a 10-5 league record.

Both teams play their final regular season game on Friday February 8 at home against Nestucca. It will be Senior Night.
