A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the St. Helens Alano Club. All are welcome. Out of respect to Franky, his family and all other addicts and alcoholics, PLEASE PLEASE be sober if you choose to attend. Pot Luck because he loved to eat.

Frank (Franky) Spry is survived by his parents Michael and Linda Spry of Vernonia, OR, his daughter Jasmine Odoms of  St. Helens, OR, his sister Amy Quaring and brother-in-law Andrew Quaring and nephew Wyatt Quaring of St. Helens OR, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and fellow brothers and sisters in the N.A and A.A community.

Franky was a proud Bering Sea fisherman and landscaper. Franky loved “lovin life,” fishing, hiking, and was a die hard U of O Ducks fan. He was a believer in working hard, giving a helping hand to all in need, and loved for his light. He loved music, dancing, star gazing, landscaping, and camping. He fire danced. Most of all “He loves his little princess Jazzy.”

Franky’s words of truth “If I had a piece of advice to give anyone it is this: Always love and respect people for who they are and always love em like it’s the last time u will ever c them again. Oh yah love urself too…”

Thank you Franky. In the words shared by one of your many friends, “May God shine rays of sunshine on all those who had the chance to know you and have become better people as a result of being in your presence.”

Wilma Bernice Frey-Obituary

Obit-BerniceFrey-webWilma Bernice Frey passed away on November 9, 2014.  A memorial service will be held on November 22, at 3:00 PM, at the Nehalem Valley Bible Church, 500 North St., Vernonia.

Bernice was born on May 11, 1922, in Hayfork, California.  She spent her younger years in Northern California, and married Russell Gerald Frey in Chico, California in 1939.  She had 5 children, and lived in San Jose, California until 1960, when the family moved to Elmira Oregon, due to changes in Russ’ health and work situation.  Bernice provided for the family during Russ’ extended hospital stay, working as a janitor.  She moved to Portland in 1964.

Bernice had always provided homes and shelter for whomever was in need, and after her original family left home, she cared for scores of foster children and young mothers in need of care.  She worked with critical and impaired children in a care facility, and then took in 4 permanent placement foster children from the facility where she worked.  They moved to Vernonia in 1977, seeking a safe, accepting and encouraging community for her new charges, in a country atmosphere.  Russ died in 1988, but Bernice continued raising her new family, and even took in a couple of her grandchildren when the need arose.  Starting about 2011, she suffered multiple strokes, and was moved to her daughter Dorothy’s home in Eugene.  Subsequently she was moved to a nursing home, where she died in her sleep at the age of 93.

She is survived by daughters Geri Carter of Bakersfield, CA; Dorothy Sofge of Eugene; Sandra Grady of Vancouver;  sons William Russell “Red” Frey of Vernonia; Floyde Frey of Scappoose; Steve Acock of Portland, and Donny Coghill of Tacoma; as well as 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Welcome to the World: Reverie Elaine Gonzales


Alec J. Gonzales and Gina E. Cropp of St. Helens, OR are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter,  Reverie Elaine Gonzales, on August 26, 2014 at 7:51 AM. Reverie was born in Portland OR and weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 21 and ¾ inches.

Reverie means “daydream” and Elaine is in memory of her great grandmother, Elaine B. James.

Grandparents are Gene and Jerilyn Cropp of Vernonia, OR and Richard and Regina Gonzales of Hillsboro, OR,

Great grandparents are Pete Gonzales of Hillsboro, Wilifred E. (Bill) James of Forest Grove, OR, and Louise Nemeyer of hillsboro, OR.

The family will make their home in Portland.

Randy Shaw-Obituary

Randy Shaw, 55 of Vernonia, OR died on October 2, 2014.

Randy was born on July 6, 1959 in Portland, OR to Ralph and Marlene Shaw. He grew up on a farm in Sherwood, OR with his three sisters and graduated from Sherwood High School in 1978.

Randy moved to Vernonia, OR in 1984 where he raised his four children. He worked as a logger for many years in the family business, Shaw Brother’s Logging,  and in 1997 opened Triple S Service, a saw repair shop. He was well known as a talented mechanic by the local loggers.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and beloved dogs. He spent many hours hiking and mountain biking in the woods, always keeping an eye out for Big Foot.

He will forever be remembered for his generous, loving heart and kindness to all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Marlene Shaw; his sisters, Lorie Hall, Lynn Shaw-Hayes and Lisa Shaw; his children, Shane Pavlovsky, Jesse Shaw, Carrie Shaw, and Zach Shaw; his two grandsons, Skyler Pavlovsky and Jayden Zimmerman. He was looking forward to the arrival of a third grandson in November.

Richard F. Compton-Obituary

Obit-Compton-webRichard F. Compton (Dick) passed away on November 5, 2014.  A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday November 15 from 1:30 – 5:00 pm at Cedar Ridge in Vernonia, OR.

Dick Compton was born August 3, 1935 in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Navy. After moving to Beaverton, OR he became a locomotive engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara, his sister Margaret, seven children, 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents Lucy and Cecil, his previous wife Elizabeth, his sister Phyllis and his brothers Donald and Cecil.

Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Idris Inez Welch-Obituary

Idris Inez Welch

Idris Inez Welch, 95 of Forest Grove, OR passed away on September 30, 2014 in Forest Grove. A memorial celebration will be held at a later time.

Idris was born in Lincoln County, Nebraska on February 6, 1919 to Abner and Minnie (Smith) Dillon. After receiving her education, Idris started teaching in a one room school house in Nebraska. Idris married Wayne L. Welch in McCook, Nebraska on March 8, 1941. Wayne passed away in June 2010.

Idris enjoyed camping, fishing, snowmobiling, playing cards, reading, painting, sewing and was a excellent cook. She also loved to do gold mining and she helped build their own log cabin. She was a devoted spouse, a wonderful mother, a dedicated teacher, a Girl Scout Leader, quick-witted, and a good friend and listener.

Survivors include her sons, Larry Welch and his wife Lorna of Zeballos, British Columbia, Canada, Ron Welch and his wife Sandy of Vernonia, Oregon, Darwin Welch and his wife Linda of Vernonia, Oregon, Leon “Shorty” Welch of Richland, Oregon; and daughters, Darlene McLeod and her husband Bryon of Vernonia, Oregon and Gayle Yokley and her husband Cliff of Atwater, California. She also had sixteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Betty Zufall of Londenville, OH, Toni Welch of Fresno, CA and many nieces and nephews.

WelcomeAsaMcBride-webAaron Wayne McBride and Andrea Updegrave-McBride of Vernonia are pleased to announce the arrival of Asa Ray McBride.  Asa was born September 22, 2014 at 2:08 PM at St. Vincent’s Hospital.  Asa weighed 6lb 15oz, and measured 20 inches.  Asa joins 22 month old brother Asher Henry McBride.  Grandparents are Wendy Stuart of Fairview, OR; Roger and Renee Updegrave of Prarie City, OR; and Wayne and Rhonda McBride of Argyle, TX.  Great grandparents are Gene and Norma Nelson of Newberg, OR;  Garland Stuart of Vancouver, Brittish Columbia, Canada; BH and Margie McBride of Milsap, TX; and Ray and Joan Jarrell of Stratford, OK.

Welcome to the World: Kayden Ryleigh Bergerson

WelcomeKaydenBergerson-webKolbie Bergerson has welcomed a new little sister. Kayden Ryleigh Bergerson was born on August 16, 2014 at 10:16 PM in Portland to parents Keli Krieger and Ted Bergerson. Kayden weighed 7 pounds 10 ounces and measures 20 inches. Grandparents are Jamela Knight of Hillsboro, OR; Don and Barbara Bergerson of Vernonia, OR; and Dennis Krieger of Scappoose, OR. Great grandparents are Pat and Darlene Knight of Vernonia, OR.

Mary “Lorraine” Borst-Obituary

obit-Borst-color-webMary “Lorraine” Borst passed peacefully the morning of September 14th, 2014 at her home in Vernonia, just one week after celebrating her 80th Birthday amongst family and friends.

Lorraine was born on September 11th, 1934 in Akra, North Dakota to Edith and John Crowston. She was the only girl of 7 children and helped raise her brothers after her Daddy’s death when she was 12 years old. Being the only girl, she and her brothers were very close – the pride and love she had for them and their Crowston name was well known.

Lorraine was active in school sports including, track, twirling, cheer leading, basketball and was once a May Day Queen. Lorraine’s education was temporarily postponed at 17, when she married Jack Odam, Soon followed the birth of 3 baby girls Mary Anne, Jackie and Kathy – she resumed and completed her education when the oldest started school. After the girls were raised, Jack and Lorraine went their separate ways continuing their friendship throughout their years.

After being single for several years, Lorraine signed up for golf lessons and caught the attention of an instructor, Larry Borst – they were married on December 16, 1977, blending families and adding 3 children, Linda, Mick and Michelle Borst. The couple lived mostly in Vernonia, retiring and building their home in a local golf community. Read More

Robert Thomas “Bob” Brady, Jr.-Obituary

obit- Brady-Color-webRobert T. “Bob” Brady, Jr., a former resident of the Vernonia community, late of Portland, died Saturday morning, August 30, 2013 at the Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center in Tualatin.

A Graveside Service was  held on Monday, September 8, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, 2080 Bridge Street in Vernonia.

Family and friends were invited to attend a reception immediately following the cemetery rites to be held at Anderson Park, 450 Jefferson Avenue in Vernonia.

ROBERT THOMAS “BOB” BRADY, JR. was born on December 14, 1953 in Lebanon, Oregon, the son of Robert T. Brady, Sr. and Dorothy Elliott. He was raised and received his education in the Vernonia community, having been a graduate with the Vernonia High School Class of 1972. Following his graduation he attended Portland State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

He was united in marriage to Sherrie Hinkle on August 28, 1984 in Vancouver, Washington. They celebrated their 30th Wedding Anniversary two days before Bob’s passing. Following their marriage they made their home in the Portland community, where he had resided since. Read More
