Loggers Grab Second Place; Lady Loggers Finish Undefeated in League

It was a good night to be a Logger on Friday February 13, as both the boys and girls squads earned important wins in their final league games of the season.

The Vernonia Loggers boys wrapped up Northwest League play in stunning fashion, moving past Nestucca and into second place.  The Loggers dominated the Bobcats while winning 58-26.  Vernonia led from the start and never looked back, taking a commanding 31-6 half time lead and cruising to the win in the second half.

The Loggers win gave them a 10-4 league record and moved them into a tie with Nestucca for second place.  The Loggers needed to win by seven points to earn the tie breaker, and did so handily.

The Loggers were once again led by freshman sensation Clay Sullivan, who sank several three pointers, drove to the basket with authority and passed the ball as well.  Sophomores Brett Elliot and Tristan Adams also had strong games for the Loggers offensively while Nikita Moskalev and Will Botelho where tough on the boards.  Senior ZiXian Chen had several break away layups towards the end of the third quarter that sealed the game for the Loggers.  Junior Jared Medlars filled in at the point when Sullivan picked up two quick fouls  early in the third quarter and found himself in foul trouble.  Seniors Logan Titus and Drew Chaney even came off the bench  and played some minutes in their final regular season game.

The win on Friday followed a dramatic comeback win by the Loggers on Tuesday, February 10.  Trailing Delphian by as many as 23 points in the third quarter and by 15 points with two minutes left in the game, the Loggers clawed their back and won 51-49.  The Loggers have now won four games in a row.

The crucial victory over Nestucca means the Loggers will avoid an extra playoff game.  The Loggers will again host third place Nestucca on Thursday, February 19 for a chance to advance to play Kappa for the District Championship on Saturday, February 21 in Forest Grove.  If the Loggers beat Nestucca they will qualify for the State Tournament.  If they were to lose against Nestucca they would still have a chance to make the state tournament by beating the winner of the of the 4th and 5th place league playoff.

Meanwhile the Vernonia Lady Loggers wrapped up  another impressive Northwest League season, once again winning the league after  going undefeated against league rivals and finishing 12-0.  The Lady Loggers 64-21 final league victory over  Nestucca on Friday gave them their 20th win of the season  and a 20-3 regular season  recored as they head into the playoffs.  The Lady Loggers are currently ranked 2nd in  state 2A girls basketball.  The Lady Loggers will play for the district championship on Saturday, February 21 in Forest Grove.

In the win over Nestucca, the Lady Loggers controlled play throughout the game, building a 35-7 half time lead.  Vernonia was led by point guard Marketa Veselkova, and seniors Meghan Sullivan and Julia Fletcher.
