John M. “Mike” Grady – Obituary

Obit-MikeGrady-webJohn M. “Mike” Grady, 80, a longtime resident of the Vernonia community, died Thursday afternoon, January 8, 2015 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, 2080 Bridge Street in Vernonia, with Pastor  John J. Cahill, of the Pioneer Baptist Fellowship in Vernonia, officiating. Concluding Rites and Interment will follow at the cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to attend  a reception immediately following the cemetery rites, to be held at the Vernonia Scout Cabin, 901 Park Drive in Vernonia.

JOHN MICHAEL GRADY was born August 26, 1934 in Longview, Washington, the son of the late John Joseph Grady and Macile Leona (Roberts) Grady. At the age of two years old, he moved with his family to the Vernonia community, where he was raised and received his education, having been a graduate of the Vernonia High School Class of 1952. He then attended O.I.T. (Oregon Institute of Technology) for two years in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

He was united in marriage to Ilene Norquist on September 26, 1964 in Tumwater, Washington. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary this past September. Following their marriage they have made their home in the Vernonia, where they have resided since.

Mike had worked as a shop worker,  log truck driver and log scaler for Crown Zellerbach Company for twenty five years, having finished his career at Wauna Paper Mill, having retired at the age of sixty-two years old.

He was raised in the Catholic faith.

Among his special interests he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards, visiting casinos,  and playing bunco with his friends. Mike also liked clam digging, vacationing, family activities and he was a great couch potato, watching western movies until the end.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John and Macile Grady, his two sons, Steve Grady and Rick Grady and his granddaughter, Kendall Grady.

Survivors include his wife, Ilene Grady, of the family home in Vernonia, Oregon;  his three sons and a daughter-in-law, Stewart Grady, of Vernonia, Oregon; Scott Grady, of Vernonia, Oregon and Tim and Kathy Grady, of Longview, Washington.

Also surviving are his six grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Dustin Dethlefs, of Vernonia, Oregon; Stephanie Grady and Sean Kelso, of Aloha, Oregon; Logan, serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Lemoore, California and Lisa Grady, Banks, Oregon; Jamie and Cory Jaeger, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Timothy Sparks, of Longview, Washington; Daniel Grady, of Vernonia, Oregon and Nicole Grady, of Sweet Home, Oregon and his five great-grandchildren, Dawson Dethlefs, of Vernonia, Oregon; Marley Jaeger, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Austin Kelso, of Aloha, Oregon; Violet Kelso, of Aloha, Oregon and Peyton Vandehey, of Banks, Oregon.

The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Vernonia High School Athletic Fund, 1000 Missouri Avenue, Vernonia, Oregon 97064, in his memory.
