Elwin E. “Al” Hillsbery, 88, a resident of the Vernonia community, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Avamere of King City.
Private Cremation Rites will be held at Hoyt Crematory in Forest Grove.
ELWIN EUGENE “AL” HILLSBERY was born on November 23, 1924 in Vernonia, Oregon, the son of the late Claude and Doris B. (Wood) Hillsbery. He was raised and received his education in the Vernonia community, having been a graduate with Vernonia High School Class of 1942.
He was united in marriage to Irene Ruby Bateman in August 1972. Following their marriage they made their home in the Vernonia Community.
Al was preceded in death by his wife, Irene in April of 1997, after celebrating over 24 years of marriage together.
He worked as a Laborer in the farming industry for many years, including for the Hazelnut Growers of Oregon, until he retired in 1986.
Among his special interests, Al enjoyed sharing stories of his adventures though out his life, working with wrought iron, mostly woodcrafting. He built beautiful cabinets and jewelry boxes. He was a master at making something from nothing.
He is also preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Doris B. (Wood) Hillsbery; his cousins Robert Reed, of Vernonia and Beulah Maikan, of Vernonia and his step-grandchild, Ira, of Washington.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Theda Hillsbery, of Hillsboro, Oregon; his step-daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Richard McGlasson, of Versailles, Illinois; and his special friends, Jim and Lori Walter, of Vernonia, Oregon, Mark Akers, of Vernonia, Oregon; Marshal and Connie Vaughn, of Vernonia, Oregon and Bill and Dona Plat.
Also surviving are many more friends of Vernonia.
The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to Oregon Humane Society, 1067 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland, Oregon 97211, in his memory.
