The Vernonia Loggers boys basketball team defeated Oakridge 52-44 in the consolation round at the OSAA State Championships in Pendleton on Thursday, February 28.
The Loggers move on the fourth place game where they will face Central Linn on Saturday at 10:45 AM.
The Loggers were led by Jared Leone who scored 21 points and had 7 rebounds. Austin Cutright added 11 points and 11 rebounds and Jesse Edgar contributed 8 points and 7 rebounds. Ruben Fabers made two clutch free throws in the final seconds of the game to seal the victory for the Loggers.
The Loggers shot much better from the field in their second game at the State Championship. Against Oakridge, VHS shot 45% from the field and 40% form beyond the 3 point line. They struggled from the free throw line again, converting only 35%. The Loggers only made 10 turnovers in the game.
Central Linn finished third in the Tri-River League with a 9-5 league record and a 19-11 record overall. The Cobras lost to Western Mennonite 55-47 in the quarterfinals before defeating Myrtle Point 53-52 in the consolation round.
