Loggers Head to Pendleton; Lady Loggers Lose

The VHS Logger boys will head to Pendleton for the second year in a row to compete in the 2A OSAA State Basketball Championships.  Seventh seed Vernonia defeated the number two seed Regis 41-40 on Friday, February 22 in a thrilling finish.  Jared Leone hit the winning shot for the Loggers and the defense stopped the Rams on their final attempt.

The Loggers will face the Oakland Oakers on Wednesday February 27 at 6:30 PM in the quarterfinals.  Oakland won the Mountainview League with a 12-0 league record and 21-5 record overall.  The Loggers are the only remaining team in the Championship from the Northwest League, as Gaston, Riverdale and Delphian were all eliminated in the first round.

The Vernonia Lady Logger’s season came to an end on Saturday, February 23, when they hosted a first round State Championship game and  lost to the Heppner Mustangs 62-33.  The fourth seeded Lady Loggers kept the game close in the first half and went into half time trailing 28-25.  But fifth seed Heppner dominated the second half, as Vernonia just could not get their shots to fall and could not find a way to stop the Mustang’s number 22 Bailey Bennett underneath the basket.  Loggers head coach Steve Whiteman conceded the game early in the fourth quarter and allowed all his girls a chance to play in their final game of the season in front the home town crowd.
