VHS Winter Sports Report

Girls Basketball-The Vernonia Lady Loggers clinched first place and the Northwest League championship with their 49-40 win over Riverdale on Saturday February 2, 2013.  It was the sixteenth win in a row for head coach Steve Whiteman and the Vernonia girls.  The win guarantees the Lady Loggers a spot in the first round of the State Playoffs.

Against Riverdale Vernonia trailed by nine points with just five minutes left in the game but came storming back to overtake the Mustangs.

“These girls are gritty and they’ll go to the floor and fight,” said Whiteman.

On Friday night February 1, the Lady Loggers defeated Faith Bible 32-23.  Vernonia won both games without Maina Martin, a key player on the team.

Vernonia also had a 39-33 win over Knappa and back-to-back wins over Delphian.

The Lady Loggers play their final regular season game at home against Nestucca on Friday February 8, which will also be Senior night.

Boys Basketball-The Loggers Boys lost to Riverdale 42-40, on Saturday February 2, 2013 but remain in third place in the Northwest League with a 9-5 record.

The game against Riverdale was a close battle that came down to the final shot of the game which the Loggers were unable to convert.

The Loggers had previously won five straight games including  league wins over Delphian (twice) 50-46 and 51-36,   Knappa 62-42 and Faith Bible 58-46.  They also defeated Warrenton in a non-league game 48-36.

The Loggers final regular season game will be Senior Night at home against Nestucca on February 8.

Wrestling-The Vernonia Wrestlers continued on their road to the District Tournament with mixed results.

At the Oregon Wrestling Classic on January 18-19 the Loggers went head-to-head in dual meets and defeated Grant Union 54-21 and Oakridge 42-33 before falling to Central Linn 46-24, Knappa 42-24 and Crater JV 45-36.

In dual league meets the Loggers defeated Nestucca 52-12 and also defeated Waldport on January 24 and then split a pair of meets on January 30, defeating Neah-Kah-Nie 40-26 and loosing  a heartbreaker to Knappa 39-34.

The Loggers host a home meet on February 7 as they prepare for the District Meet on  February 15-16,  which will also be hosted by Vernonia.
